Description
No flower says Christmas like the beautiful poinsettia plant. In Mexico the poinsettia is a perennial shrub that will grow 10-15 feet tall and they were once considered weeds! Some people who have latex allergies get an allergic reaction to the milky sap that ooze from the plant. The showy colored parts of the plants usually considered the flower are actually the colored bracts (leaves). Contrary to popular belief, the poinsettia is not poisonous although the leaves have an awful taste and can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Red is the most popular color for these plants. December 12th is Poinsettia Day, which marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett in 1851.
