Sheep are gentle and harmless, and rather small and delicate under their bulky coats. As domestic animals they are extremely useful and productive. Their coat (of varying length, thickness and curliness) gives wool; their meat called mutton or lamb, provides food; and their milk is used to make several kinds of cheese. The earliest domestic breeds probably descended from the wild Sheep (Mouflon) of Greece. In North America there were no native domestic Sheep, so they were brought over from the Old World.
